Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Installation

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Installation
There are many different types of VoIP installations and environments and we are going to break down how to install some of the major types such as:
• VoIP Installation with Cable Connections using a cable modem
• VoIP Installation with DSL using DSL modem/router
Many problems with small businesses can be solved by using some of the numerous advanced features of VoIP installation. Your small business can become a big communication empire by using some of these advanced VoIP features which include call forwarding, follow me and call forward on busy, voice mails as emails, unlimited call plans and virtual numbers.
VoIP Installation with Cable Connections
VoIP installation with Cable modem connections are some of the simple and straight forward installations for your VoIP service. To install VoIP with cable connections, follow these basic steps:
• Ensure to power down the devices and the cable modem.
• The Ethernet cable from the cable modem should be connected directly to the internet port of the router (the router/IAD combo unit). And if you’re not using a router, connect directly to the LAN port of the IAD.
• If you are making use of a separate router and an IAD, then connect the Ethernet cable from the IAD’s LAN port to the numbered port on the router
• Also connect your computer into the numbered port on the router
• Starting with the cable modem, do a complete power cycle (allow to resync), follow by the router, then the computer and lastly the IAD.
• Connect a phone with a RJ-11 connector into the Line 1 port of the IAD
• Allowing the IAD enough time to sync up, lift the receiver and check for dial tone
Note: If after the connection, you notice that can neither get a dial tone nor surf after completing two or more complete power cycles. This means the cable modem is not permitting a new IP address on the new device.
VoIP installation with a DSL Connection
DSL connections are more demanding than Cable connections because most DSL modems supply DHCP and are also routers. Some of them have firewalls and will perform SPI state full packet inspection. This may lead to some connectivity problems like one-way audio or cause NAT issues. Follow these steps if you’re installing DSL for the first time.

• Connect the IAD to the DSL modem using an Ethernet cable, and connect a phone to the 1st phone port, then power up the IAD.
• Wait for a minute or two and check for dial tone, check for dial tone then confirm two-way audio
• Then connect the router to the DSL modem and disable the DHCP by using the router as a switch
• If you have one-way audio or you do not get a dial tone, make the DSL modem a bridge and set the router to connect by the use of PPPoE.
Note: This will require a DSL account username and password
